Renovating your bathroom?

5 ways you can save $

If you are renovating your bathroom more than likely done your research and found out that on average, the cost of a bathroom reno in Australia is approximately $20,000. Presumably you are renovating your bathroom because it’s looking a little tired and outdated. But, if everything is in working order, $20K is a reasonable chuck of cash and you may be questioning if it is worth the investment, or asking yourself ‘should I just live with this old bathroom?’. The good news is, there are plenty of ways to save on your renovating costs, and yes you can have the bathroom of your dreams without blowing your budget! With this in mind, here are 5 tips to consider when considering renovating your bathroom, to help you save a significant amount of money, (without sacrificing on style)…

  1. Make minimal or uncomplicated movements to your plumbing – you can make a significant saving to renovation costs by keeping original plumbing points where they are, or making minimal movements. Moving plumbing points can be complicated, and you should seek the advice of an experienced plumbing company such as AMS Plumbing to discuss your plumbing relocation requirements. They will be able to advise you on your options for moving plumbing and the costs this may incur.
  2. Shop smart – Look for leftovers on sites such as Gumtree, many people buy more than they need and have tiles, fixtures or fittings leftover from a bathroom renovation, or they may even list their old items such as taps, baths and basins – one person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Also consider asking the bathroom stores if they are selling any display models or factory seconds at a lower cost to brand new items.
  3. Don’t flush money down the toilet – consider keeping certain fixtures and fittings, such as your old basin and taps. Renovating the rest of the bathroom may be enough to make these items look brand new. Also consider whether you need a whole new toilet, or whether you can replace the lid and the toilet seat, which will give your toilet a fresh look without the replacement and plumbing costs.
  4. Mix & Match – mix the old with the new, expensive with the inexpensive. As with all renovations, a few key pieces can make a bathroom look a million dollars, whilst achieving this look at a fraction of the cost.
  5. Paint rather than tile – if you’re considering a full wet room, even the least expensive of tiles can make a significant amount of your budget disappear up the wall (literally). Instead of floor to ceiling tiles all around, for a dramatic look consider limiting tiles to the wet areas and floor and painting the rest of the walls to make an area pop and give it a new lease of life.

Renovating is always going to come at a cost, but by considering one or more of the tips above, and listening to the suggestions and advice of professionals such as plumbers and other tradespeople, you can hopefully save a significant amount of money and spruce up your bathroom at the same time.   References: https://www.finder.com.au/how-to-save-on-your-bathroom-renovation
