Leaking hot water system?

A leaking hot water system needs immediate attention!

You likely won’t know there is anything wrong until there’s not enough hot water, or no hot water at all!

As soon as you realize your hot water system is leaking you should investigate immediately before it turns into a much bigger issue! A leak could be a sign that your hot water system is corroding and will likely happen after around 10-12 years.

What do you do when your hot water system is leaking?

Step 1 – turn off the hot water

You need to turn off the inlet pipe to the heater. This applies to gas; electric and solar hot water systems.  If you can’t find the inlet tap then you should turn the water off at the mains water meter. This will mean that you have no water at all so you should fill some jugs with water for drinking and flushing the toilet.

Step 2 – call a plumber

Once your hot water system is turned off you need to address the issue. Although you can try to do it yourself, in most cases a faulty hot water system is the result of a bigger issue and will need the attention of a licensed plumber. A plumber will be able to address the issues immediately and stop it getting worse and causing further damage to the hot water system and your home.

Hot water leaks can escalate quickly so if you suspect your hot water system is leaking, contact a licensed plumber immediately!
