Is your water bill through the roof? How to check for leaks around the home.

Leaks, no matter how big or small can turn into a plumbing nightmare if left unnoticed for too long.

Not only that, they can have a serious impact on your water bill!

If you notice your water bill rising for no apparent reason then you likely have a water leak on your hands.

Signs of a water leak:

  • Rising water bills
  • Mould growth on walls or carpets
  • A musty smell
  • Damp carpets
  • Visible damp stains on walls

How to check for leaks:

  • Check visible leaks: dripping taps, running toilets, leaky pipes.
  • Check plumbed fridges, hot water systems and internal and external taps aren’t leaking.

Can’t find anything but still suspect a leak? It may be hidden!

How to check for a hidden leak:

  • Turn off all taps and appliances such as the washing machine and dishwasher
  • Check your water meter and take note of the numbers.
  • Don’t use any water for an hour (don’t even flush the toilet!) and check the water meter again
  • If the last numbers on the water meter have changed, then you may have a water leak!

A barely visible leak from a toilet can waste more than 4,000l of water a year, and a dripping tap can waste more than 96,000l so it’s no surprise your bills are creeping up!

A hidden leak can only be determined and fixed by a licensed plumber. A leak that you can’t see could be doing some serious damage, so better to address it as soon as you suspect it!

Contact your local licensed plumber to investigate and locate the source of the leak, stop the potential damage it could be causing and start saving you money!
