Common Household Plumbing Issues

Maintaining your household plumbing is the key to saving money on your water bill and preventing plumbing emergencies. We have listed below four of the most common household plumbing issues:

Toilet Blockage

There is nothing worse than leaving a blocked toilet to fester for days. You don’t have to wait for a plumber, a blockage can be quite simple to fix if you know what you’re doing. The most common and easiest way to unblock your toilet is with a plunger which can be purchased from a local plumbing or hardware store. You’ll need to wear gloves, things can get a bit messy! Make sure you begin slowly as the plunger will push air into the bowl at first. Push down, and then pull back out quickly. Once you have rid all of the air from the plunger you can continue pushing and pulling until the blockage clears and the water begins to drain. Sometimes this can take a little while so be patient.

Water bill too high

Unless there is a water hog in your home taking regular hour long showers the most common reason for a huge water bill is leakage. Don’t despair, there is a simple way of finding out for sure if you have a leak somewhere in your home.

Stinky Drains

Smelly drains are a common complaint and can be due to several reasons. The drains in your bathroom can trap hair, toothpaste, soap scum and other fatty residues which harbour bacteria causing a stench. Similarly, in the kitchen, food and scraps can get caught up in the pipes creating a sludgy stinky build-up. Most of the time these issues can be easily solved with over the counter drain clearing products without an issue. If the stink persists though, you’ll need to call in a plumber. Drains in your bathroom and laundry floor have a water seal, to stop gases from the sewerage seeping up through the drains. Check these drains for water by simply shining a torch down the drain. If you cannot see any water, it has dried up and you’ll need to run the tap or shower attached to that drain to re-fill. This is more commonly an issue in homes that have been vacant for some time or bathrooms not in use often.

Noisy Toilet

It is normal for a toilet to make a whooshing sound directly after use and for a few moments after as the tank refills with water. But if you notice your toilet is making noises when not in use you may have a problem such as leaking or malfunctioning toilet valves. In this case you’ll need to call in a Plumber to prevent your water bill from skyrocketing. Need a Plumber in Brisbane? AMS Plumbing Brisbane are just a phone call away.
