Chemical drain cleaners should only be used as a last resort, they are full of harmful chemicals that are bad for you and your plumbing system.
If you find yourself standing ankle deep in water whilst you shower, it’s time to try one of these homemade drain cleaners.
These natural products are safe and easy to put together from items you likely already have at home. This makes them super cost effective and not harmful to the environment!
This is one drain cleaning solution you’ve likely already heard of – because it works! This duo goes together perfectly, are easy to make and keep your plumbing clear of harsh chemicals.
Simply mix ½ cup of baking soda with ¼ cup of table salt and pour down the drain. Follow with 1 cup of warm vinegar. Put a plug or some tape over the drain to prevent the solution, which by now will be foaming and bubbling escaping. Leave for 15 – 30 minutes and rinse the drain with hot water for 30-60 seconds.
You can repeat this process weekly or monthly to keep your drains flowing freely.
If you regularly use oils in your beauty routine or have been guilty of pouring grease into your sink after cooking then your clog is likely due to a build up of this grease in the pipes, slowing down the water flow.
Mix two tablespoons of dishwashing detergent in a pan of boiling water and slowly pour down the drain. This solution should be effective at breaking down fatty clogs because you are turning them back into a liquid state and removing the greasy residue from the pipes with the detergent.
Again you can do this regularly to help keep drains clear and clog free.
Straighten your hanger out but leave a small hook at the end. Use this hook to grab any hair or food that is causing the blockage in your drain. Repeat this until you have removed as much as you possibly can then rinse with boiling water or even better, one of the DIY drain cleaners mentioned previously.
